AMSTERDAM – Finally the time was there, the official launch week of the Green Office VU! Many hours of hard work resulted in a week filled with fun and informative events. In case you missed it, or couldn’t join one of the events you wanted to, we hereby offer you an overview of all the amazing things that happened.
On Monday the theme of the day was FOOD. Who doesn’t love food? We do! Taking in consideration the Meatless Monday campaign that started at the VU on Monday Oct 5, we organized an amazing vegetarian sushi workshop. Before the workshop started some tasteful and healthy fruit smoothies were handed out at our promo stand at the entrance of the main building. The subscriptions for the workshop went fast and within a week it was completely full. The workshop was given by the Soesjie Kar and took place at the Green Office. After an explanation of how to roll your sushi, all the participants started to create their own. Everybody had so much fun and the final results looked delicious and so they were!
Tuesday was all about ENERGY. A discussion panel with five experts, that all have different points of view on the energy transition, were challenged with questions. The panel was formed by Marijn Bosman from D66 Amsterdam, Pauline Westendorp who has a pioneer position in the movement of energy communities, Ewald Breunesse who is manager energy transition at Shell, Liset Meddens the coordinator of Fossil Free Netherlands and Ilse van den Breemer who works with Eneco as district manager for the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The discussion was very interesting and some heated questions were fired!
Wednesday, FAIRTRADE day! It was time for some fun and easygoing quality time. A pub quiz, held at the office, with drinks on the house was perfect to get to know each other and learn more about fair trade. The questions weren’t always that easy, but the ambience was amazing! It felt like the office was turned into a real pub. The winners went home with a home baked vegan cake made by one of our volunteers, Ankie Petersen.
With a movie and a Q&A organized by Metabolic the focus of Thursday was on CLIMATE CHANGE. Metabolic is an in Amsterdam based company that was founded in 2012 with the mission to transition from the global economy towards a fundamentally sustainable state. The movie was about how an area in Amsterdam Noord – de Ceuvel – was affected by climate change.
Last but not least, the SUSTAINABILITY day, Friday was all about the official opening of the Green Office. We started with a Green Route, a biketour across great sustainable initiatives at the Zuidas, organized by the Green Business Club Zuidas and the Green Office VU. The route ended at the VU where it was followed by the Green Academy. At the Green Academy Aart van Veller of Vandebron held an informative talk about the future of sustainable energy. Followed by this, the alderman of sustainability – Abdeluheb Choho – and a member of the executive board of the VU – Bernadette Langius – officially opened the Green Office by watering our tree as a symbol of helping us grow. To thank everybody for their support and toast on the opening, we had Green Drinks and delicious Ben & Jerry’s were provided at the office afterwards.
Thank you to everybody who has joined and helped us out during our opening week. We also want to thank our partners at Green Business Club Zuidas and VU for the teamwork! We have enjoyed our opening week and are looking forward to making the VU and her community more sustainable!
