On the 29th of May 2015 the fourth edition of the SustainaBul, the sustainabillity ranking for education institutes, took place. The SustainaBul is an initiative of the student organisation Studenten voor Morgen. Schools are judged on sustainability in both their education, research and operations. The VU did not receive any awards the past years. This year the VU was awarded the second place on the university ranking and third place on the overall ranking. This also resulted in the award for Biggest Climber.
This fierce rise is due to several factors. Since October 2014 the VU has her own sustainability platform, the Green Office VU (GO.VU). The GO.VU worked together with the various departments at the university in implementing and communicating on sustainability. In order to improve the transparency of the sustainability initiatives at the university the VU has upgraded her website. The GO.VU also made an overview of sustainability in education. With this inventory the GO.VU aims to encourage the departments to reveal the sustainable courses and to motivate students to participate in these courses.
However, the GO.VU has not reached all of her ambitions yet. The education overview has shown that sustainable education is not yet available for everybody. Therefore, the next step is to implement a sustainable minor that is accessible for every student, as well as courses specifically for every bachelor/master.
Furthermore, the GO.VU sees several challenging possibilities for the improvement of the operations at the university. The GO.VU is working together with the various departments and business owners at the VU to make their services more environmentally conscious.
